I either use "A" or "M", but "M" most often. Harper doesn't like the Flash much so I don't use it often. Getting good light behind you helps a lot. In this particular shot, Harper was facing a window around 2pm in the afternoon and it was sunny out. The white curtains help diffuse the light so it's not as harsh on your subject. Also, the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens is great for these types of shots. You can pick it up for $99 in most places.
